A major Chinese bank has obtained a court order in B.C. freezing the assets of a businessman accused of fleeing China and buying "luxury" Lower Mainland homes after defaulting on a $10 million loan.

 

In an application brought before a B.C. Supreme Court judge last week, lawyers for China CITIC Bank claim Shibiao Yan and his wife bought more than $8 million worth of properties in Surrey and Vancouver over a three-month period beginning in June 2014.

Vancouver’s Mayor says the city is forging ahead with taxing empty homes, with or without the province’s support.  Gregor Robertson says the punitive tax would boost rental supply at a time when there’s almost no vacancy and a crunch on affordability.  He says the first and preferred option is for the provincial government to create a new “residential vacant” property class through BC Assessment.

More than 90 per cent of all detached homes in Vancouver are now worth more than $1 million, up from just 19 per cent a decade ago, a new study by a local urban planner has found, showing how rapidly housing prices have escalated in the Canadian city.

 

The biggest jump came in the last two years, with the proportion of million-dollar homes in the city climbing to 91 per cent in 2016 from just 59 per cent in 2014, according to the study by Andy Yan, acting director of Simon Fraser University's City Program.

The City of Vancouver has reached an agreement with Canadian Pacific Railway that will transform a contentious stretch of old rail corridor into a public greenway.

Under the deal, the city will pay $55 million to purchase the land on the railway route, which extends for nine kilometres from False Creek near Downtown Vancouver to Marpole on the city's south side.
